I bought this at target during thanksgiving 2010 for $59.99. I had my friend try out as she is more experienced in sewing. She said this was a good basic machine for my purposes which would be simple projects not requiring any fancy stitches.It has all the basic stitces and a zipper foot, a buttonhole foot, darning plate etc.I tried out all the stitches and the stitch quality is good so far. I am going to keep this one.If anything goes wrong I will post a review!

It has been a long time since I helped my mother use her Singer sewing machine. Machines are not as solidly built today as they were 40 years ago, but this machine runs much better than the old Singer. Singer has resolved all the old complaints we had back then. This is an easy to use machine for the starting sewer or limited user. It sews many layers of average fabric, I have not tried heavy fabric, but the machine appears robust enough to tackle these jobs. I checked out the machine at the Target Store and noticed that it was light, but much heavier than comparable Brother machines. As an engineer, this means to me more metal and less plastic. The 1409 does have plenty of plastic too, but the use is in the right places; this seems to be a well engineered product in general. I'm satisfied and would recommend it.
